Making your own probiotic drink is simple and healthy!

Many people are generally aware that probiotics are good for the intestines. But the fact that you can easily make probiotics yourself is a completely different story. When you make your own probiotics, you no longer need to go to the supermarket to buy yakult. However, this product also contains a lot of sugar. Making it yourself is much healthier and not at all difficult to do. All you need are the kefir roses, whole milk, a preserving bottle and a colander.

Instead of a sugary yakult, you can simply make your own super healthy probiotic drink every day with milk and milk kefir roses. All you need is:

  • milk
  • kefir florets
  • a colander
  • 2 canning bottles or regular glass jars

The kefir roses must be purchased once, they are not expensive. You see them for sale everywhere on the internet, even on Marktplaats there are often several suppliers. There are also a number of suppliers on the internet who offer bags with kefir powder instead of fresh kefir roses. That is of course also possible. Once you have purchased the kefir, they will automatically “grow” into a larger quantity. This is because the kefir florets grow due to the lactose in milk.

How do you make probiotic drink?

Preparing the milk kefir is really very simple. Place the roses in a glass jar or preserving bottle and add about ten times the amount of milk. Then place this mixture in a dark place for at least 24 hours. In kitchen cabinets, for example. The fattier the milk you use, the thicker the milk kefir will be. You then get a kind of drinking yoghurt. After 24 hours (longer is also possible) pour the mixture through a colander (note: do not use a metal colander, the kefir florets do not like that). The roses that remain in the colander are then put back in a clean glass jar with milk for next time. The drink that made it through the colander is the ready-made milk kefir, the healthy probiotic drink. This tastes best if you put it in the refrigerator for a while.

It is also possible to store the mixture for longer than 24 hours. The drink then often becomes thicker and also more sour. If you find the milk kefir tastes too sour, you can always use fewer kefir florets next time. Or leave it for a little less time. Then the fermentation process (which is super healthy) is a little shorter and the taste is a little less sour.

Once you get the hang of it, you can start making variations. You can also make delicious shakes from milk kefir by mixing fruit into it. How about mixing summer strawberries into the kefir, then you get a delicious strawberry milkshake.

For a creamier taste, you can also add whipped cream to the florets and milk. And of course you can also add spices such as cinnamon. Or mix in pieces of (bitter) chocolate thoroughly. Or… well, there are plenty of options to make the milk kefir even tastier than it normally is.
