Prevent burnout

Can you avoid burnout? For some it is an absolute truth, while others dare to challenge it. The fact is that there are a number of characteristics that you can recognize if you are consciously involved in the process. The only question is whether the man or woman heading for burnout recognizes those characteristics. Usually not, otherwise far fewer people would have a burnout, right? Yet there are also plenty of scientists who dispute this and indicate that if you force yourself to think about your busy life, you can avoid burnout. This involves an awareness process and the subsequent ability and willingness to take action.

Definition burnout

If you search for definitions on the internet, you will come across all kinds of things.

  • ”Doing the English word over and over again. “
  • “The feeling of no longer being able to cope with the (work), but above all a feeling of uselessness and powerlessness. “
  • “Burnout is the end stage of long-term, often years-long, over-exploitation of the body. “
  • “A burnout occurs when people continue to work hard despite the stress and tension.”
  • “Burnout.”
  • “Specific form of stress. “
  • “Burn out means something like being burned out, extinguished and emotionally exhausted.”

It all differs a little bit from each other, but the big picture is clear. However, in many cases it is work-related (or where work is the biggest contributor to the overall picture).

For example, if you are tired and it cannot be traced back to a heavy physical or mental effort that day, it is good to monitor the extent to which the fatigue disappears or persists. In the latter case, there may be cause for concern, because you may be heading for burnout. This also applies to similar aspects. A simple rule teaches us that sufficient sleep should allow you to recover. If this is not the case for a long time, there is usually something wrong.

But even if you have been busy busy busy for a long time and have no concrete complaints yet, you can be heading towards burnout. Some features that are more common:

  • If you are bothered more than usual by things that you forget. Cortisol (the stress hormone) can temporarily make your memory work less well.
  • As long as you can’t fall asleep and can’t switch off your brain, so to speak.
  • Do you sleep more than average and are you more or less tired during the day?
  • Where sports can normally be an excellent outlet, this is no longer the case. You have difficulty exercising or it does not give you that pleasant feeling you normally have after exercising.
  • We all have “waking up” in the morning with a strong cup of coffee… but doesn’t that cup of coffee have the desired effect?

To trade

If you have been suffering from one or more complaints for a longer period of time, it is time to start thinking about how to avoid burnout. If you realize at an early stage that you need to change something, you can often get ahead of it. If you are at a further stage, professional help may be advisable.

View your lifestyle and adjust

Assuming that you are ahead of burnout, it is a good idea to look at your lifestyle and reorganize it. But organizing alone is not enough. You will also have to start straightening out or actually setting priorities. You can want anything, but if it doesn’t fit your pattern, you will really have to start striping. This is not a matter of just waiting until things get better, this is a permanent solution.

Make sure there is variety in your agenda and make sure you see enough daylight. It doesn’t matter whether you walk the dog, play sports or spend time outside for daily tasks. Work is often the culprit, but divide it into too busy at work or work that is demotivating. You can adapt to being too busy, sometimes having to cut your package or delegate. The situation is different if there is an unpleasant working atmosphere, for whatever reason. Changing the process, in consultation with a manager, may be an option. Sometimes looking for another employer is the best option. Not easy for the man or woman who finds it scary, but health is slightly more important than your fear.

Conscious process

Your body indicates what it can and cannot do and if you are consciously involved in the process, make sure that you turn your body signaling into a conscious process. Adopting a different lifestyle can sometimes take time and can feel awkward. Once you have recovered, your body can handle more and we tend to do more again. There is a good chance that you will fall back into your old lifestyle.

Just being tired and having the evening and night to recover is a very normal process. This way you also grow old in a healthy way. Make sure that you are consciously working on it and that does not mean that you spend the whole day navel-gazing, have the stopwatch in your hand or literally have your finger on the pulse, but that you do everything consciously and take it into account when planning. Keep in mind that the entire agenda does not have to be completely full. Moreover, it also helps to do something spontaneous every now and then.

Being busy, busy, busy may sound very popular, but if you are overexploiting your body, it is no longer fun at all. Who or what are you doing it for? To do everything in the shortest possible time? Then you can, but if you get into physical and mental problems as a result, you really have a bigger problem and unfortunately, it can be even worse.
