Mangosteen, the super fruit from Asia

The fruit ‘Mangosteen’ is relatively unknown in Europe and America, but has been declared ‘the Queen of fruits’ in Asia and has been used by the local population for thousands of years. The scientific name of the mangosteen or mangosteen is ‘Garcinia mangostana’. It is not related to the mango and it is not a stone, it is a separate fruit that grows in tropical areas. It has been used in Asian medicine and health industries for thousands of years, and for good reason. More and more health authorities are seeing the benefits of this (still) unknown super fruit. For example, it fights free radicals in our body and fatigue.

The mangosteen is a fruit the size of a tomato, it has a hard thick skin and the inside contains a white colored content that is visually similar to a tangerine. It only grows in tropical areas, and is mainly known in Southeast Asia. In this area the super fruit is known for its beneficial effect. Various sources show that thousands of years ago the Buddhists used the fruit to combat fatigue and inflammation in the body.

The positive effect of mangosteen

Not only the flesh is used, but especially the peel. It contains a lot of Xanthones (anti-inflammatory substance), also called natural antioxidants. This explains why in Asia the fruit is often used as a natural remedy to inhibit inflammation.

Furthermore, the fruit neutralizes free radicals in the body. Free radicals are small particles in the body and are released by, among other things, chemical additives in food (colorants, etc.), stress, body detoxification and other oxidation processes of the body. Free radicals can cause a lot of damage, they stimulate the growth of bad germs and too many free radicals can lead to tumors and vascular diseases, among other things. The small particles also ensure that the body ages faster. Mangosteen fights these aggressive free radicals in the body.

Where can you buy mangosteen?

The mangosteen is hardly available in Europe. The fruit only grows in tropical areas on mangosteen trees, which can grow up to 80 meters high. Attempts have been made to grow the mangosteen in greenhouses or in climates other than the tropical climate. So far without success.

After harvest, the fruit has a shelf life of only 2 to 3 days. This makes it difficult to export the fruit. Unfortunately, you will have to travel to Southeast Asia for fresh mangosteen. However, mangosteen juice and pills are available in the Netherlands. For example, a very healthy liquid nutritional supplement containing mangosteen is Vemma. This juice has been declared by independent researchers to be extremely healthy and an ideal addition to the daily diet. Even Dr. Oz (of Oprah fame) recommends this product and featured it in one of his shows. In addition, Vemma’s company also has a product Bode, a drink that helps you lose weight. At Bode, an entire waste program is incorporated into a mobile application. It is used by Chris Powell in the successful television program Obese. Vemma products can be ordered online and are not available in stores.

Benefits of the Asian superfruit

There are reports floating around the internet that mangosteen is a medicine and that it fights diseases such as cancer. However, this has never been proven and indicates quackery. For the time being, mangosteen is a fruit with exceptional natural properties. It is good for your body, like any fruit, and also has some interesting benefits.

Benefits of Mangosteen:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Reduces fatigue
  • Maintain healthy digestion
  • Relaxes the muscles
  • Helps strengthen the immune system
  • Neutralize free radicals

In short, mangosteen is rightly called a super fruit. It has a positive effect on the body. Unfortunately, it is not easy to obtain outside tropical areas, but the contents of the fruit are used in various products available in the Netherlands.
