Headache in children

One would think that children with headaches is actually impossible, but it still happens that children suffer from headaches from a very young age. The reason for this could be a lack of sleep, but a persistent cold could also be the cause. Poor vision can also cause headaches in a child. Children can also experience multiple forms of headaches, such as migraines or tension headaches.

From what age

Children can have headaches from a very young age. Half of children aged six years and older even experience headaches at least twice a year. Most often in children it concerns migraine or tension headache. Sometimes the cause lies in the use of certain medications and in some cases the headache can also be a result of underlying diseases or conditions. When a child comes to a doctor with a headache, he or she can make a good diagnosis by asking the right questions about the type of pain, where it is located and when it occurs. In almost all cases, it is not necessary to do more research.

Tension headache

Tension headaches in children are characterized by a pressing, dull pain in both sides of the head, and sometimes also in the neck. Children who have tension headaches usually continue with their activities and do not appear ill. The headache may last a few hours, but longer is uncommon. Children with tension headaches usually sleep well, but falling asleep is sometimes difficult.

Migraines in children

Migraine is a form of headache that sometimes occurs in children. Migraine in children manifests itself slightly differently than in adults, and occurs in attacks that can last two hours, but even two days is possible. The migraine attack has a clear beginning and the end of the attack is also clear. The pain is on both sides of the head, and additional symptoms may include vomiting and nausea, but fatigue, yawning and listlessness may also be a sign. Hypersensitivity to bright light is also one of the symptoms.

What can you do for your child?

Night’s sleep

First of all, you can ensure that your child gets enough sleep. Especially if your child’s headaches keep coming back, this is an important first step to take.

Fresh air

Sufficient fresh air can also reduce the risk of headaches in your child. Make sure that your child gets outside enough and does not sit in front of the television or computer for too long.

Ventilate

Proper ventilation of your home is also important.

Avoid foods

Certain foods can also cause headaches, such as cola and chocolate. This does not mean that this is the case with your child, but if your child consumes a relatively large amount of cola and chocolate, it is worth eliminating these foods for a while.

Pain relief

There are special painkillers for children that you can administer if your child really suffers from a headache.

Visit doctor

If your child suffers from headaches very regularly, it is not an unnecessary luxury to take your child to the doctor.
If your child often suffers from headaches, it is advisable to inform the child’s school about this so that this can be taken into account.
