Nausea due to fatigue: symptoms and what to do?

Fatigue can make you feel so weak that it can make you feel nauseous. Nausea and fatigue are two different complaints, but nausea can be a consequence of fatigue. You may also feel tired and nauseous at the same time. The complaints will usually disappear after taking some rest and you will feel good again after a few good nights of sleep. If fatigue persists for a longer period of time, it can cause problems and lead to exhaustion and impairment of your daily functioning.


Being tired is something that everyone knows. It can have many causes, both physical and mental. You often know why, for example if you have a lack of sleep or have been very busy. As a result, you have a lack of energy and do not feel as fit as normal. Concentrating becomes difficult and you would prefer to sleep. Everything becomes more difficult due to the fatigue and you feel more irritable. Well-known symptoms of fatigue are:

You are usually tired due to lack of sleep. General practitioners see many patients who suffer from insomnia. Insomnia is when you suffer from lying awake for too long for several weeks, being unable to fall asleep, being unable to stay asleep or waking up too early. As a result, you are tired, lethargic and irritable during the day. Ultimately it affects your performance. Every person needs a night’s sleep to recover. The number of hours of sleep required for this varies per person.


Everyone feels nauseous sometimes and it can have many causes. If you have the flu, migraines, a middle ear infection or have drunk too much alcohol, the cause may be obvious. Pregnant women sometimes suffer from morning sickness in the early stages of pregnancy. It is not always clear why someone is nauseous. Usually being nauseous is not serious, but it is very annoying. Nauseous from fatigue

You can be seriously tired for all kinds of reasons, for example due to stress. You may have been feeling like your battery is empty for a long time, but you just have to keep going. The balance between your capacity and load is seriously disturbed and you feel extremely tired. If you don’t get enough rest, it will eventually take its toll. Eventually you are so tired that the body reacts by sending signals, one of which is nausea.

Physical reaction

Because you are tired and perhaps continue with your daily activities, you have to keep using the muscles and putting your brain to work. This forces your body to produce the stress hormone adrenaline, so that your heart beats faster, your breathing increases and your body is prepared to take action. Because muscles have to tense everywhere, you can suffer from headaches or back pain. But when the stress hits your stomach, you feel nauseous. It can even be so intense that you have to vomit. Stress is a normal reaction of the body to respond to a situation, but it should pass on its own. When stress complaints persist for too long, complaints such as fatigue or burnout can arise.

To the doctor

Usually, taking some rest and sleeping well for a few nights is enough to get rid of fatigue and nausea. In some cases there is something else going on. Go to the doctor if the complaints last longer than a few weeks or if you have other complaints in addition to fatigue and nausea. Consult your doctor if your fatigue and nausea are accompanied by the following complaints:
