Shoe and boot sizing

Every person is different and that also means that every pair of feet is different. This does not alter the fact that most feet fit within the standard sizes. Then the problem arises that the same dimensions are not applied in all countries and that is why a conversion table can also be useful. Furthermore, when buying boots, it is important to look at the shaft.

Feet

Feet are often underestimated. A lot of attention is paid to all kinds of body parts, but the foot is still of secondary importance for many people. This, while the foot reflects the body (for example, foot reflexology is based on this). In addition, the foot carries us for life and we are mobile thanks to functioning feet. A well-fitting shoe is actually not a luxury, because the foot forms the basis of our mobility from a very young age.

Shoe sizing

The Mondopoint system is used for the current sizing of the shoe. The length-width ratio of the foot is used. The size as we know it is shown in length. In addition, the width is proportionally incorporated into the fit, but we are always talking about standard sizes here.
This also means that if your foot deviates from the standard, there is a good chance that you will have problems with the dimensions used. Of course there are also brands that make different sizes (for example for wide feet or feet with a high instep) and of course there are also custom-made shoes.

How do you determine the shaft of the boot?

Many people just do whatever they want when they walk into a shoe store. They look at what they like and then only at the size of the shoe. Things aren’t much different on the internet. Only the man or woman who has difficult calves knows that he/she must be careful in determining the correct size and therefore what to pay attention to.

Determine the shaft

  • Place the foot straight on a flat surface (right under your body).
  • Take an inch and place an inch around the widest part of the calf. Legs are rarely exactly the same, so make sure you measure the thicker of the two calves.
  • Place your foot flat on the floor and bend slightly and measure from the slightly bent knee to the beginning of the shaft (at the ankle).
  • Then measure the maximum length of the boot from the foot to just below the knee.

What should you pay attention to?
If you follow the above things carefully, you will get the exact size for the shaft. Of course, if the model indicates this, the shaft may be slightly lower, but never higher. It is also important to take into account one or one and a half centimeters of clearance. This is useful if you are wearing something in your boot, such as thick socks, stockings, pants, leggings, etc. Sometimes a small stretch insert on the inside of the boot can solve an annoying gap at the top of the boot. This is especially nice for round calves.

Put on different models of boots in the store and experience what feels best. This of course also has to do with the material, but certainly also with the fit. Boots should fit snugly around the calf.
