Types of oppressive headaches

Everyone doesn’t feel well sometimes and might stay home from work for a day. One person stays at home because of a nasty cold, another because of a flu and another because of a nasty headache. However, headaches are more common than most people would like and can be quite irritating. There are many types of headaches, one of which is oppressive headaches. Two types of oppressive headaches are tension headaches and cervical headaches.

Tension headache is one of the most common types of headaches in our society. Tension headaches usually result from excessive tension in the neck and facial muscles. Tension headaches have different characteristics, namely:

  • The most important characteristic of tension headache is the typical pressing and pinching pain in the head. This oppressive pain is by far the most annoying thing about this headache.
  • During an attack, the oppressive pain does not increase, but remains constant. Even during an increase in activity, the oppressive headache does not increase.
  • The pain that comes with a tension headache manifests itself on both sides of the head. The pressing pain can therefore be found on both the left and the right side of the head.
  • Most people do not vomit or feel nauseous from these headaches.
  • This form of oppressive headache can be easily combated by taking ibuprofen or paracetamol with a glass of water.

Cervical headache

A second example of an oppressive headache in cervical headache. Cervical means that the neck, the muscles and vertebral joints are involved. For this reason, tension headaches and cervical headaches are often mistaken as the same headache. A second similarity between the two headaches is the oppressive pain that the headache causes on both sides of the head, i.e. on both the left and the right side. In addition, the oppressive pain in cervical headaches does not increase during an increase in activity or during an attack. Cervical headaches mainly occur because people do not do enough physical exercise and therefore experience pain in the neck and joint muscles. It may come as no surprise, but cervical headaches can be treated the same as tension headaches.

Treatment with medication

When suffering from a mild or emerging headache, many people will combat this headache with over-the-counter remedies, or remedies that you can buy without a prescription. It is best to take a painkiller that only contains paracetamol, unless you are of course hypersensitive to the components of paracetamol. Preparations containing ibuprofen or naproxen are also suitable for this. When you use painkillers, it is important to always read the package leaflet carefully in advance and check what the possible side effects and interactions with other medicines may be. Do not take a painkiller more than fourteen days a month, this is not healthy and not good for your body. What can you do yourself about an oppressive headache?

There are also many people who do not immediately turn to painkillers, but first want to let it pass naturally. It is important that you are well informed about your own personal circumstances for effective treatment of headache complaints.   • Sufficient night’s sleep; People who go to bed late and get up early are more likely to suffer from headaches in the morning. A good night’s sleep is half the battle.
  • Enough moisture; make sure you drink at least two liters of fluid per day and eat fiber-rich food daily. This promotes bowel movements and thus also the excretion of headache-causing waste products.
  • Use alcohol and coffee as little as possible; try to drink little or no coffee during the week and get up on time during the weekend, so that you can drink a cup of coffee at the same time as during the week. Try to minimize alcohol consumption.
  • Also make sure you get enough fresh air and exercise. So go outside every day and go for a walk or cycle.

In addition to oppressive headaches such as cervical and tension headaches, there are a number of other types of headaches such as migraine and cluster headaches. None of these headaches are characterized by oppressive pain, which is why migraine and cluster headaches do not fall under the category of oppressive headache.
