A magnesium deficiency is becoming increasingly common in people (and animals). This is partly because the soil and therefore the food that comes from it contain much less magnesium than before. That’s why it’s a good idea for many people to supplement their levels of magnesium. This can be done with tablets, but also by rubbing magnesium oil on the skin. Magnesium affects, among other things, the muscles, headaches and migraines, nerves and fatigue. Magnesium is a mineral that contributes to normal muscle and nervous system function. Magnesium oil cares for stiff and heavily stressed muscles and stimulates blood circulation. It is quickly absorbed by the skin and restores magnesium levels where it is needed. Skin absorption does not burden the gastrointestinal tract. The muscles in the back, neck, shoulders and calves relax and a tired feeling disappears. Magnesium works together with calcium, whereby calcium ensures the contraction of muscles and magnesium ensures their relaxation. What does magnesium do for the body?

  • Magnesium plays an important role in energy metabolism and muscles. It removes lactic acid after exercise or stress. There is also a connection between magnesium deficiency and cardiac arrhythmias, after all, the heart is a large muscle!
  • Magnesium, together with calcium, helps build strong bones. A good balance of magnesium and calcium is essential. Too much calcium, without extra magnesium, causes calcification in the veins, muscles and joints.
  • Magnesium deficiency is a well-known phenomenon in people with fatigue complaints. It is very important for the metabolism of carbohydrates and for the transport and storage of insulin, which regulates our blood sugar levels.
  • Because magnesium can also relax the head and neck muscles, it can prevent headaches.
  • Magnesium is also used by people with eczema, skin allergies, or other skin complaints. The skin recovers, flakes disappear and the itching usually subsides quickly. Chlorophyll, which is rich in magnesium, also cleanses the blood.
  • Nerves also need magnesium to relax. That is why extra magnesium can contribute to less nerve pain.
  • Furthermore, magnesium is an antioxidant and therefore protects against free radicals. That is why it also works against aging.

How much magnesium do you need per day?

The RDA (general daily allowance) for magnesium is different for men and women:

  • Women: 250 – 300 mg per day
  • Men: 300 – 350 mg per day

During times of stress, the body uses a lot of magnesium and the same body therefore needs more magnesium per day.

How can a magnesium deficiency arise?

There are several reasons why a magnesium deficiency can occur:

  • As briefly mentioned above, the amount in the soil has been drastically reduced by, among other things, the use of fertilizer and pesticides. Vegetables will therefore contain much less magnesium.
  • But excessive sweating can also cause a magnesium deficiency.
  • And stress and sleep deprivation also play a role in building up a magnesium deficiency.
  • People with less well-functioning intestines will often have problems with the absorption of minerals, including magnesium.
  • This also applies to people who take antacids, which means that the stomach is less able to absorb magnesium.
  • Older people also often have more difficulty absorbing minerals, including magnesium.
  • Furthermore, even breathing can influence the development of magnesium deficiencies. Breathing calmly is therefore recommended.

Protein-containing foods as well as regular calcium intake help with the absorption of magnesium.

How can one add magnesium?

Magnesium tablets are available everywhere and in all different compounds. For example, you have magnesium in organic and inorganic compounds. But a magnesium deficiency can also be resolved by rubbing magnesium oil or by taking a magnesium oil (foot) bath a few times a week. Magnesium oil is more easily absorbed by the skin and body than by oral ingestion. Especially people with stomach and/or intestinal problems who most likely have difficulty absorbing magnesium can benefit from magnesium oil. This also applies to older people.

Magnesium oil

Magnesium oil can be bought ready-made, usually in 100 ml spray bottles. The best-known brands are Zechsal, Golden Naturals and Ozmag. But you can also make magnesium oil yourself! Magnesium oil is not actually an oil at all. It is so called because it feels oily on the skin. All you need to make it yourself are magnesium flakes, boiled water and a bottle to put it in. You use approximately the same amount of water as magnesium flakes. So, for example, 50 ml of water and 50 ml of flakes. Put these together in a saucepan and boil the water. Once the flakes have dissolved in the water, simply pour them into a spray bottle and the magnesium oil is ready.

How do you use magnesium oil?

You can use magnesium oil in a few different ways:

  • By spraying on the body
  • By taking a foot bath with magnesium oil
  • By taking a bath with magnesium oil

A spray with magnesium oil contains approximately 8 mg magnesium (15 mg magnesium chloride is also indicated)

By spraying on the body

Spray the oil on the arms, legs or even anywhere on your body. Some people recommend applying cream to the soles of the feet, abdomen and armpits. And then rub it in well. If you suffer from specific muscles (for example restless legs), spray the magnesium oil there. In the beginning the oil can sting quite a bit. This takes a few minutes. If it is very annoying, you can dilute the oil a little further with water. The more often you use the oil, the less the tingling sensation will be. Some people leave the oil on for fifteen minutes and then remove the excess oil, but you can also simply leave the oil on the skin. It just depends on your preference.
Approximately 2 sprays per 10 kilos of weight are recommended for maintenance. So for 70 kilos of body weight then 14 sprays per day. If you want to eliminate a magnesium deficiency, you should consider doubling the amount, so 28 sprays in this case.

By taking a foot bath

Then put some magnesium oil (or 100-200 grams of magnesium flakes) in a tub of warm to hot water and let your feet soak in this warm water for at least 10 to 20 minutes. In the beginning, you will have to take a foot bath more often to supplement the magnesium deficiency. But later, once a week is enough to maintain the magnesium level in the body.

By taking a bath with the magnesium oil

You can of course also simply put the oil or magnesium flakes in a bath and then relax! A (foot) bath with magnesium is also very suitable for removing waste. A bath contains much more water, perhaps 120 liters, so you have to use quite a few flakes. However, the recommended amount varies considerably per brand. In the beginning, a bath twice a week is a good basis to maintain, but once the deficit has been replenished, this can of course also be done less often.

What differences can you notice by using magnesium oil?

If you take a foot bath in the evening just before going to bed, you will sleep much better due to the relaxing effect of the magnesium oil. Restless legs will relax and feel good again. When used after exercise, you will have much less or no muscle pain because the muscles relax much better. You may even notice that you have less stress because the magnesium helps relax the nerves. And magnesium can also be very helpful for medical problems such as high blood pressure or depression. In short, it’s really worth trying magnesium oil!
