Window prostitution

Window prostitution, many people have a (pre)judgment about it. Some people think it’s gross and others are avid visitors. There is still a taboo on prostitution, despite the fact that it is perhaps the oldest profession in the world. Window prostitution has been encountered since ancient times, mainly in the big cities.

Prostitution

Prostitution is sex for payment, a man or woman performs sexual acts for which a customer pays. In most cases, it is women who provide the services. These women are called prostitutes . A prostitute is commonly called a whore . Names such as public woman, slut or temeier are also often used.
The workplace of a public woman can vary greatly, she can work at home, on the street or in a club. Another option is behind a window. This is a kind of shop window where the ladies, usually scantily dressed, offer themselves and their services in exchange for money. This form is called window prostitution .
A common opening line for most customers is “How Much?” If an agreement has been made about the price and actions, the customer may enter the room of the prostitute. l The window will be neatly closed with a curtain as long as a customer is present. If the customer ultimately wants other things than previously agreed, more will have to be paid for these extra services. In this way a prostitute tries to earn more money, this is called teasing. For that reason, her office is also called the tendon room. An area where there is a lot of window prostitution is also called a red light district .

What drives a woman to prostitution?

There are women who voluntarily choose to live as a prostitute. These women see sex and love as two different things. They love sex and earn a nice amount of money this way.
But many women are forced by their husband, boyfriend or pimp and then things are less rosy. A large part of the money earned even has to be handed over to these “gentlemen”. The ladies are also often afraid of the men and do not dare to stop work. Many women are also forced to work in prostitution due to an addiction, in order to earn some money this way.

Not without danger

A life as a prostitute is definitely not without danger.
Many prostitutes come into contact with abuse, either mental or physical. They are exposed to the whims of their customers every day, because not everyone is equally friendly to the ladies. Some men have the bizarre idea that you can treat a public lady like trash.
The pimps can also sometimes be very violent if they think that the ladies have earned more money than they are telling them. STDs are a major risk for which they have to be on the lookout every time. Every now and then a customer offers more money to do the deed without a condom. Which is very tempting for some women…

Friendly men

Most men come purely for sex and go their own way after the act. Sometimes men return to the same lady more often and build a good bond. There are customers who even bring flowers or gifts for the woman in question, these men always treat a public lady with respect.

Where can you find window prostitution in the Netherlands?

When you think of window prostitution, you often think of De Wallen in Amsterdam. But there are more cities in the Netherlands where it can be found

  • Utrecht (July 2013 all prostitution boats closed by court order because there was alleged human trafficking)
  • Groningen
  • Deventer
  • Alkmaar
  • Doetinchem
  • Heerenveen
  • Nijmegen
  • Eindhoven

  • Almelo

The Red light district

Ask a tourist what the Netherlands is known for and there is a good chance that in addition to clogs, tulips and cheese, the ” Red Light District ” will also be mentioned. Better known to us as De Wallen in Amsterdam. The Red Light District is known almost everywhere in the world and is therefore frequently visited by tourists.
De Walletjes, as it is also called, owes its name to the area where it is located. It is located in the old center along the Oudezijds Achterburgwal, Nieuwezijds Achterburgwal, Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. These ramparts were soon shortened to the Red Light District.

Abroad

Window prostitution is also found in Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. In Germany, the Reeperbahn in Hamburg is perhaps the best known. But you can also find window prostitution in large cities such as Düsseldorf and Mannheim. In Belgium you can go to Antwerp and Brussels for it. A beautiful location can be found in Ghent: “the glass street”. This street is covered with a glass roof. It is not only known for its ladies but is also on the list of protected heritage.

More and more resistance and protection

The government is increasingly offering resistance in the area of (window) prostitution. Take, for example, “Project 1012”, with which the municipality wants to tackle the Red Light District in Amsterdam (1012 is the postal code of the area). She wants to clean up the neighborhood and, among other things, close windows to prevent illegal prostitution, crime and trafficking in women.
Windows are also closed in other major cities, often for the same reason. The government has plans to raise the minimum age for prostitution from 18 years to 21 years, to prevent minors from ending up in this world. By order of the court ( July 2013) closed the prostitution boats in Utrecht because in some cases there was alleged human trafficking.
