Umbilical cord and disorders

The umbilical cord is the cord that connects the placenta and the fetus in the uterus. After birth, the umbilical cord is cut, this is called naveling. If the umbilical cord is not properly attached to the placenta, it can tear.

Navel cord

The umbilical cord is the cord that connects the placenta and the fetus in the uterus. The umbilical cord’s job is to provide the fruit with nutrients and oxygen, and to remove waste products. The length of the umbilical cord is approximately 50 to 60 centimeters. The diameter is approximately 2 cm. The umbilical cord consists of two arteries and one vein. The vein transports nutrient-rich and oxygen-rich blood from the placenta to the fetus. The arteries transport the waste products from the fetus to the placenta.

Origin of umbilical cord

When the fetus is developing, it first creates a part that becomes the placenta, and a part that becomes the final baby. The umbilical cord also develops quite quickly. Without the umbilical cord, the fetus will not survive and cannot grow into a full-fledged baby. The umbilical cord contains two arteries and one common vein. A jelly-like fluid surrounds these veins. This protects the veins against external impacts, for example from the baby. The baby will start to squeeze the umbilical cord at a later stage.

Navel

After birth, the umbilical cord is cut, this is called naveling. This is done until the umbilical cord has been exhausted: the last bit of blood from the placenta and the umbilical cord has flowed to the baby. When the umbilical cord no longer pulsates, it no longer has a function, as it has stopped transporting blood.

The umbilical cord is clamped and cut. Later, the umbilical cord is shortened slightly and bandaged with gauze or a cotton cloth. A plastic clamp is also often used. The portion of the umbilical cord that remains dries up into a black stump after a few days and eventually falls off on its own.

Diseases

If the umbilical cord is not properly attached to the placenta, it can tear. This usually happens shortly before or during childbirth. The baby can die as a result of a ruptured umbilical cord. That is why there is a need for haste with the graceful. But it is not always possible to intervene in time. Unfortunately, sometimes a baby dies from this. In any case, during delivery it is clear that the baby becomes short of breath and the heart rate decreases.

Knot in the umbilical cord

The movements of the child can cause a knot to form in the umbilical cord. As a result, the baby does not receive enough nutrients or oxygen. The result is delayed growth, damage to the baby or death. This depends on the extent to which the knot pinches the veins in the umbilical cord. A knot in the umbilical cord often occurs when the baby is still very mobile and therefore has room to turn. The baby then crawls through a loop in the umbilical cord, as it were, creating the knot.

Umbilical cord

An umbilical cord is when the umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby’s neck at birth. The baby often feels short of breath during delivery. Green amniotic fluid may come out and the heart rate may drop. It is often seen later that the child is behind in motor development or language development. Brain damage is rare. Intelligence is often not affected.
